My Beliefs

I have many different feelings and beliefs on the integration of technology. I can see how beneficial it can be, but I can also see issues along with that too. Technology is great because it is how people live today. It can get students more active and engaged in their learning. It also can simply make learning fun. It makes communication with parents, colleges, and students much easier, etc. These are great things, and they are things that I want in my classroom.

With that being said, I am still through all I have learned fairly skeptical about the use of technology, especially if not carefully monitored. One students can easily get distracted on things like the internet and it can make learning much more difficult. Another reason (and this is big to me) is simply having the supplies accessible. One things that I learned really well in field is that computer time is not something easy to come by. There's only so many computer labs in a school with a lot of classes, and trying to get time to do projects can be hard. If you're in a less wealthy school you may not be able to use many forms of technology without spending the money yourself.

Over all I think that technology integration is a great idea and should be used whenever able. I just think that it can be hard to come by, and maybe through more experience, I will have more ideas of integration that would be easy and cheap to use with the curriculum. Who knows we have an ever changing technological world.

Lessons Learned

It absolutely blows my mind at just how much our world is dependent on technology. Its like children are programmed from little babies to handle these things, and they are incredibly smart! I liked how the WWW article talked about the reasons to be cautious but also talked about how if incorporated properly, just how effective technology can be. It is very possible to get children more involved and to make learning fun.

I also was intrigued by the "Did You Know" video. Although this video is a few years old, it still gives a pretty good eye opener at how fast technology is changing. I look at what this video was saying about the technology changing in 3 years and think, Wow, it really is different. A lot of things are the same but the abilities of technology keep increasing so fast. I can see this being difficult with students using technology that teachers have no idea how to use unless they keep up on technology.

Lastly, I enjoyed the "Teens See Disconnect Between Personal and School Writing". This was interesting to me because it really explained my teenage life. I was one that never enjoyed english and writing, but I always would write and message friends. The first paper I wrote that I truly enjoyed was my college persuasive essay; this was because I could actually put my opinions and feelings into it, and research what I wanted to learn. This is a good example of integrating technology into the education system. It works.

Strengths and Weaknesses

According to the UNI survey I am at the levels of novice and apprentice. I have a pretty good basic knowledge of the computer and its programs, as well as how to use them. With the NET standards I do know some ways of integrating technology into the classroom and why it is important. I also know the different issues of using technology in the classroom, which is why in some areas I still and somewhat skeptical.

Some goals that I have for integrating technology are one, becoming more familiar with different uses for it in the curriculum. Another would be to not only learn about the uses out there but the technology itself, such as how to use certain programs and become more knowledgeable with them. There are different ways to go about accomplishing these goals and building more strengths, this can be through educational articles, teacher workshops that districts hold, and even teacher videos that can be found on youtube or teachertube etc.

By using these different resources of knowledge, I can learn from other peoples experiences and get a more hands on experience with the technology out there. I will be more well rounded as a teacher and hopefully be a better teacher in general.

Reflection #13 11/25/10

WHAT:
This week we only spent two days in the classroom with the holiday, so we didn't see much technology used. The only thing that happened was the kids took a math test in the computer lab.

SO WHAT:
As I said in a prior blog, this school uses computers a lot in their teaching/testing. I feel that this is very beneficial with the speediness of getting scores back, and it shows the students exacty what they missed and what the right answer should be. I did find a problem with it though. I don't like how easy it is to make a mistake. Many kids new the correct answer but they didn't click right on it, or didn't push hard enough, and therefore they got it wrong. It just left me with some mixed feelings. I need to start thinkiing about the pros and cons now so that I will be more prepared later.

NOW WHAT:
Now that I have seen this I need to start thinking about if I would want to use computers like this for my tests and if so for which ones. I feel that it is important on many things in math to show your work, and you can't do that with computers. I need to also become more accustomed to using these online testing sites and knowing how to set them up. If I know how to do it now, it will only make it easier later, thus allowing me to be a better educator for my students.

Reflection #12 11/18/10

Field Response Service Learning Project

Emilee Williams, Alyssa Wilson

3250: 01

a. Central Elementary School is a Title I school located at 95 North 400 East Pleasant Grove, UT 84062, in Utah County. The community has approximately 39,000 people and Central Elementary itself has around 570 students. It was established in 1893—three years before Utah was granted statehood. It is known greatly as “The Space Center” in which over 265,000 people have attended over the years, embarking on missions and adventures through space. We are in a classroom of twenty-four students. Our cooperating teacher is Jenny Woods, who has been teaching for four years.

b. Our relationship with our cooperating are both formal and professional. During class time it is very professional; we call one another by our titles and it’s all business. We make sure our teacher knows she’s the one who is in charge and we are there to help. During lunchtime and before school we are able to hang out and its less formal. We call each other by our first names and talk about personal things. Overall it is a very relaxing and easy-going relationship where we all understand boundaries and lines in and out of the classroom.

c. Our teacher was very impressed with what we did. She felt it was appropriate to the criteria we had been teaching all week and it was a good wrap-up to the lesson. She noticed how intently the students payed attention during it. She also enjoyed the music we chose for it.

d. We feel our teacher approved of all the lessons we taught. They all tied into the core curriculum and tied into one another. She used some of our ideas and lesson plans to teach the other classes their social studies. One lesson plan she really liked was our photo analysis. She liked the group involvement, technology use and the enduring understanding taught.

e. Our teaching session went rather fast. she was no novice when it came to creating digital stories. She explained when she first began teaching she had made a bunch. Since she is so familiar with the process, we just did a quick run down on how to use Photo Story 3. She really liked the applications such as the voice recorder and the fact you can make your own music or take some off a file.

f. Being able to teach an actual teacher something useful was good for our morale. We felt like even though we are novices to the program we still have a lot to bring to the table due to what we learn in our classes. Last year I was going over technology workshops available to teachers and I found they can get pretty pricey. Being able to use one another as resources and experts in the field is all the more better for collaborative teaching and learning.

g. Our cooperating teacher was able to learn a different program that is free to download. She also saw how easy and quick it is to Photo Story. From seeing our digital story she was able to learn from it and get more ideas on how to teach mountain men in the future. In being able to be taught from us she didn’t have to pay for a workshop that takes all day.

h. In being able to create a digital story we got to see what its like step by step and the hard work and creativity that goes into it. We gained a better sense of teamwork and how to work with a partner to collaborate and compromise our visions. We learned a fun and easy program to create digital stories. From here on out we have the knowledge we need to make digital stories to enrich out lessons with technology.

i. Our digital story wasn’t as hard and time-consuming as we thought it would be. In working together we were able to split the work. We both had the same ending goal so it was easier on us. We feel this assignment was overwhelming at first but when we broke it down into steps and worked step by step to get it done the overall process went smoothly. We fell it was worth it because of the reactions of the students. They all loved the digital story and got really into the music. Also, the fact that we used pictures from our first lesson plans (which they sorted as a class), they were more engaged. Overall, a very rewarding assignment.

Reflection #11 11/11/10

WHAT:
This was my second week out in field, and I observed the use of technology in the testing system this week.

SO WHAT:
This school does a weekly AYP test in the computer lab as practice for the end of year testing. It will include information they've learned as well as stuff they haven't gone over yet. Also at the end of the year, their year end testing is then taken in the computer lab. They believe that by doing this they can get faster results and the kids won't be as intimidated for the end testing because of the AYPs. This is important for me to know now because I need to be learning how to work these things and become more computer literate to better help my students academic needs. I also need to start doing things like this in my field lessons and try to incorporate computers more.

NOW WHAT:
As a future educator I really need to understand where our teaching is coming from. Kids today are so much faster with finding things on the computer and even more important, we can use this to our benefit. I like the idea of getting the testing results faster. I also like the idea of getting the students used to this style of testing so that it's not so intimidating in the end. I was a horrible tester because I had anxiety. This helps kids become accustomed to it so its not as big a deal. I want to learn more about the different programs being used so that I can become more familiar with them via field and other experiences. This way I can be a better teacher for the students of this generation.

Reflection #10 11/4/10

WHAT:
This week we spent out in field, in our 4th grade class. I am learning a lot about management techniques through observation of our teacher. Currently we haven't stared teaching yet so we are just helping with tutoring the students and doing odds and ends that the teacher requests of us.

SO WHAT:
The time we spend in the classroom is very useful to me. I am learning so many different things that I wouldn't have known just by going to a college class. I am also applying the different things that we are learning about in school. I am at a title one school, so I was excited to see what different kinds of technology they would use. Our class has an overhead camera, which I thought was really cool. With this, they don't have to make overhead sheets. This just shows a book or regular paper (or whatever you're filming) and displays it on the screen in the front of the room. I love seeing all the new techniques that are out there, that I never had growing up. Learning about these also give me ideas of other ways of showing things, for presentations and things like that, that I would have never otherwise known about.

NOW WHAT:
the experiences I am having by student teaching is so valuable to me and my students as a future educator. I am learning different management techniques for transitions in the classroom, along with learning different techniques of teaching with things such ass technology and the arts. I really am enjoying being out in the field and I know that by learning and experiencing these things now, I can see how they are used and use them later to improve my own teaching abilities; thus aiding in the learning of my students.

Reflection #9 10/28/10

WHAT:
This week in class we worked on our digital stories. Both Emilee spent the whole time finding pictures that we wanted to be in it.

SO WHAT:
Doing these digital stories are very beneficial in learning. It helps with different kind of learning styles (like visual). I have always felt that a great way to catch my attention is to show an interesting video clip of something. Learning to do these now can help me and my colleges in our field and preparation for teaching. We can get some curriculum done to use in the future, in our own classes, and get practice so that we can do more things like this in the future. It also helps us learn where to get information and pictures for the future.

NOW WHAT:
As for my future classroom, this is a good skill to have as well. The world we are in keeps getting more and more technologically based. I think that by using this teachnology as a resource to teach, we can connect better with our students. I want to be able to show digital videos as introductions or summaries to what we are learning, or even yet, use one to tell a story about a person we are learning about, etc. These videos can tell and make a point in minutes that would take a much longer time to teach with the same emotions. I want to use my resources to teach to the best of my abilities, and digital videos is a key to doing so.

Reflection #8 10/21/10

WHAT:
Today we went over creative commons as well as the different copyright laws for our digital videos in a jigsaw.

SO WHAT:
This information is very useful to me as a student today. I am always doing papers, making videos, and using videos in my school work. With out the proper knowledge of copyright I could get into some major problems--and I don't want that. It almost always spices thing up to use ideas from other people and things but without giving credit to them, it's breaking the law. All students need to know this information. It is getting so much easier to plagiarize with technology increasing the way it is, and many people don't really know what needs to be done to avoid that. I'm happy to learn this and I will be sure to use it.

NOW WHAT:
Copyright is not only an issue for college students, but even all the way down to elementary. I want to make sure that I am educated well enough to teach my students what they can and can't do, and importantly why. As educators, we need to teach our students what to do so that they don't get into trouble. Also to make sure they are doing their own work. Creativity is something that is easily sparked by other peoples ideas, we just need to make sure that they being credited, and I will definitely make sure my students know what they need to do.

Reflection #7 10/7/10

WHAT:
Today we learned about digital videos. We watched different examples and then talked about our homework--which is doing a storyboard for our own videos.

SO WHAT:
To me this is very good to learn about. I love history and videos add so much to learning about them. As a student now, I can use them in my different lesson plans that we're doing for field. I can also start using it in my presentations for my classes. This is beneficial to all of us in the education program. When we teach using primary sources in lessons, this is a good way to incorporate them and get the point across that we specifically are trying to portray. It also is fun to watch.

NOW WHAT:
It is something that can be very fun and useful in the classroom. I am very passionate about things like history because I have visited a lot of the American sites and experienced them for myself. I feel that by doing videos like this in the classroom, you can invoke emotion into the curriculum that normally wouldn't be there. It incorporates primary sources and helps them to get more out of the lessons. I plan to start working now to both find stories I can use on certain topics and also find some that have already been done to use in my classroom. Also I will continue to practice using the different movie making tools so that I will be better at them later. I do plan to do assignments like this is my future classroom as well, to help the students learn more about certain subjects.

Reflection #6 9/30/10

The vidcast that my partner and I created is called Paint. It is an introduction to the different techniques and forms of painting that will be worked on throughout the next following weeks. We chose to do art because we are required to teach it in the classroom for field. It is based on 5th grade, standard 1: The student will explore and refine the application of media, techniques, and artistic processes. Objective 1:Explore a variety of art materials while learning new techniques and processes.

Vidcasts such as this can be very beneficial in the classroom because they can easily catch the attention of the students as well as make them interested in learning/doing it. Having the students make their own can be beneficial too, because they can do enjoyable research and become engaged in primary sources. This vidcast is an aid to "Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity". They will be able to reflect on their learning and experiences.

There are some drawbacks in the use of this vidcast, for one I feel that although we spent countless hours on this assignment it is still slightly boring. I would probably do it in a different program because Powerpoint is not near as fun as I'd hope it to be. We worked very hard on this and I enjoy making videos, but in the future I would want to become more knowledgeable of other programs to make it more interesting. I am not sure if i will use this in my future teaching; most likely if I do, I will add more too it and make some alterations to really make it exciting. I just wish I would have had a greater knowledge of the programs.

Reflection #5 9/23/10

WHAT:
Today on class we learned about vidcasts. We discussed what they are, what they can be used for, and then our assignment in which we are to make our own vidcasts for student teaching.

SO WHAT:
Vidcasts are fun for entertainment, not only for in your free time but also educationally. Over the past several weeks, I have been doing lesson presentations in class and we have been using different youtube videos for the "engaging" and "attention catching" opening. I think that using the vidcasts like this is very beneficial because it adds to the presentations etc. With more practice, I would like to start making my own videos for class projects/presentation in effort to make it more personal and more specific to what I'm trying to portray. I like the idea of vidcasts and I plan on using it a lot more in my future education classes.

NOW WHAT:
The concepts of vidcasts, I believe, will be essential to use in my future classroom. We are entering a world that is so dependent on electronics and kids are drawn in by videos and hands on things, they can't just get lectured to death. I want to make my classroom a good learning environment and I feel that a major key to that is simply making learning fun. If a child enjoys being there they will be more comfortable and able to learn. Vidcasts can get students excited to do upcoming projects and help them be interested in a specific subject. I plan on using them a lot, and I plan to try and have the students make they're own when it applies.

Reflection #4 9/16/10

WHAT:
Today in class we learned about the use of Podcasts in the world and then specifically in the classroom. We then were given the task of making a school public announcement in the form of a podcast.

SO WHAT:
It has amazed me over the past few weeks of being in the program just how useful a podcast can be in school currently. Honestly, I'd probably use vidcasts more, but I could definitely use podcasts too. I have been given lesson teaching assignment after lesson teaching assignment. In a lesson about the 50 states, I could use the animaniacs 50 states and capitals song to help them remember (or even help me). Podcasts can just add so much more interest in a subject. I also could use podcasts for notes or things like that, that way I wouldn't have to scribble down notes as my professor is talking at the speed of lightning. Basically, I really want to start using it more in my own school experience.

NOW WHAT:
When it comes to the concept of my future classroom, I will definitely be using podcasts in my teaching. When I was young we were taught the "school rocks-preamble song" and it still to this day gets stuck in my head. I want my students to remember concepts that they're taught, and if podcasts can aid in that then I will use them. Learning should be fun, learning should be memorable, and I truly believe that if I add different activities and genres such--such as podcasts--then I just might d a better job at accomplishing that. One more thing that podcasts can do is help parents know whats going on. Yes typing out a paper that says everything that will be going on in a event works...but it's not near as interesting. The concept of a public announcement is a great idea in my opinion, not to mention its even fun for me to make. Talk about a win-win situation! Our future is turning totally electronic and I really want to do what I can to help the kids REALLY learn, and I believe this is a key way to accomplishing that task.

Reflection #3 9/9/10

WHAT:
Today in class we learned how to make our own webpage. First we created the page and then added tabs such as a calendar, homework, etc. as if it were for our classroom.

SO WHAT:
There are many benefits to using this in my life today, the biggest reason for me personally is simply having another place to store my "key assignments". I hear over and over again about how we need to keep them in 5 different places. The great thing about this is they are all organized and available to me at any instance. I also like how I use it in lesson planning right now for student teaching. By having the different files and folders on my web page, I can resource all of the supplies I want to use and have them all on hand. This is SO helpful with the issue of flash drives.

NOW WHAT:
Along with the immediate benefits, there are also a lot of benefits with this in my teaching career. By having the ability to make and easily update a web page, I can help my students and their parents in knowing what is going on (or going to happen) in the classroom. As a child, I always traveled and although I was a strait A student, I missed a lot of school. By having a classroom web page, I can save students and parents the hassle of finding out what they missed or if they have all of the homework. It is all accessible to them and if there is any questions, they can simply meet with or contact me for any clarifications. If they lose my info, its all on the site. I just think that this is a huge deal in making parents more comfortable and trusting towards teachers. I want close relationships with my students and their parents and I am excited to try this out in my future classroom.

Reflection #2 9/2/10

WHAT:
This week in class we relearned about the different things that can be done with google. We went over the different documents, calendar, and igoogle. We were then given the assignment of using UEN and google docs to do research on either a core objective of the social sciences or the arts.

NOW WHAT:
There are many benefits in learning to use these tools. A main one is, it is very useful in my education experience right now with preparing to do student teaching. Right now we are learning what we need to know and teach for our student teaching and google docs is a great way to communicate and work on projects within our groups or partnerships without having to meet at one specific time. Everyone can help and do it at their own time. One thing I really liked about this assignment is that it goes right along with several assignments we have to do and it also gives us practice with the UEN page.

SO WHAT:
By knowing about these tools I can he,p my future students in many ways. One thing in practicing it now, I will be better at it in the future. But even more so it can help me as a teacher in being more "professional". I mean this in a way of, I can have a schedule of everything going on, meetings, etc. right in front of me whenever I need it without having paperwork everywhere. I can take notes and lesson plans with me without having to bring a book or scattered papers or even a thumb drive; it's always with me! I think that an organized teacher and less stressed teacher is what students need to really learn. These are great tools that will help make my future classroom run smoother and allow my students to learn in a peaceful environment. I definately will be using them.

Reflection #1 8/26/10

HERO FROM EDUCATION:
My hero from my educational experience was from my elementary school at Rocky Mountain Elementary School. This teacher was Mrs. Janette Monson. She was the teacher that I have loved and idolized in the teaching profession. Mrs. Monson was a very enthusiastic teacher that originally taught all subjects, and then became a specialty teacher for history. I had her for my 5th and 6th grade history. I want so much to teach like her; she was fun, caring, knowledgeable, and down right made learning fun! We would act out the different characters in history or do projects drawing ourselves as the different Egyptians. I had always done well in school, but this took school to a new level. She really challenged us, but she kept it interesting for all her students. If I could choose one teacher to be just like, it would be her. I hope that I can remotely resemble her in my teaching, I know I would be a successful teacher.
