Reflection #8 10/21/10

WHAT:
Today we went over creative commons as well as the different copyright laws for our digital videos in a jigsaw.

SO WHAT:
This information is very useful to me as a student today. I am always doing papers, making videos, and using videos in my school work. With out the proper knowledge of copyright I could get into some major problems--and I don't want that. It almost always spices thing up to use ideas from other people and things but without giving credit to them, it's breaking the law. All students need to know this information. It is getting so much easier to plagiarize with technology increasing the way it is, and many people don't really know what needs to be done to avoid that. I'm happy to learn this and I will be sure to use it.

NOW WHAT:
Copyright is not only an issue for college students, but even all the way down to elementary. I want to make sure that I am educated well enough to teach my students what they can and can't do, and importantly why. As educators, we need to teach our students what to do so that they don't get into trouble. Also to make sure they are doing their own work. Creativity is something that is easily sparked by other peoples ideas, we just need to make sure that they being credited, and I will definitely make sure my students know what they need to do.

Reflection #7 10/7/10

WHAT:
Today we learned about digital videos. We watched different examples and then talked about our homework--which is doing a storyboard for our own videos.

SO WHAT:
To me this is very good to learn about. I love history and videos add so much to learning about them. As a student now, I can use them in my different lesson plans that we're doing for field. I can also start using it in my presentations for my classes. This is beneficial to all of us in the education program. When we teach using primary sources in lessons, this is a good way to incorporate them and get the point across that we specifically are trying to portray. It also is fun to watch.

NOW WHAT:
It is something that can be very fun and useful in the classroom. I am very passionate about things like history because I have visited a lot of the American sites and experienced them for myself. I feel that by doing videos like this in the classroom, you can invoke emotion into the curriculum that normally wouldn't be there. It incorporates primary sources and helps them to get more out of the lessons. I plan to start working now to both find stories I can use on certain topics and also find some that have already been done to use in my classroom. Also I will continue to practice using the different movie making tools so that I will be better at them later. I do plan to do assignments like this is my future classroom as well, to help the students learn more about certain subjects.

Reflection #6 9/30/10

The vidcast that my partner and I created is called Paint. It is an introduction to the different techniques and forms of painting that will be worked on throughout the next following weeks. We chose to do art because we are required to teach it in the classroom for field. It is based on 5th grade, standard 1: The student will explore and refine the application of media, techniques, and artistic processes. Objective 1:Explore a variety of art materials while learning new techniques and processes.

Vidcasts such as this can be very beneficial in the classroom because they can easily catch the attention of the students as well as make them interested in learning/doing it. Having the students make their own can be beneficial too, because they can do enjoyable research and become engaged in primary sources. This vidcast is an aid to "Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity". They will be able to reflect on their learning and experiences.

There are some drawbacks in the use of this vidcast, for one I feel that although we spent countless hours on this assignment it is still slightly boring. I would probably do it in a different program because Powerpoint is not near as fun as I'd hope it to be. We worked very hard on this and I enjoy making videos, but in the future I would want to become more knowledgeable of other programs to make it more interesting. I am not sure if i will use this in my future teaching; most likely if I do, I will add more too it and make some alterations to really make it exciting. I just wish I would have had a greater knowledge of the programs.
